Principal’s Report

Dear Families and Friends

Faction Cross Country

On Friday 3rd August 2018, students enjoyed an excellent morning of Faction Cross Country. Students from years 3 to 6 competed in our cross country event, running 1000metres and 1500metres. It was a fantastic event with all students showing commitment and resilience to challenge their bodies and complete the endurance race.

Thank you to all those parents who were able to attend the competition. It was great to build atmosphere, cheer and support our children. This helped make the event more enjoyable.

At the end of competition, the results were very close between three of our four factions. Zeus was fourth with 870 points. Apollo came third on 940 points. Venus was second with 1070 points and Mercury was our winning faction for 2018 with 1520 points. Congratulations to all our Mercury competitors.

Interschool Cross Country

Congratulations to all those students who represented Byford Primary School at the Interschool Cross Country event last Friday 10th August 2018.

Top effort from all our runners as Byford Primary School placed second in the overall competition.

An extra superstar effort must go to 6 of our competitors who placed in the top 3.

NAPLAN Online – School Readiness Test

You may have heard that NAPLAN Online was introduced in 2018, with 274 schools Western Australian schools participating. Our school will be transitioning to NAPLAN Online in 2019.

NAPLAN online will provide better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information. Your child’s results will be returned to the school faster, within a few weeks rather than a few months.

This trial, called the School Readiness Test (SRT), will enable us to assess our technical readiness to implement the new online assessments. In addition it will gives us a chance to try out the new national online assessment platform in a real-life classroom environment

During August 2018, all students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in a trial of the assessment platform, by undertaking online readiness tests that include examples of the new NAPLAN online questions. Each test will take about 45 minutes to complete.

Participating in this trial is important as it will help us ensure we have adequate internet connectivity, and whether students have access to sufficient number of devices for NAPLAN Online testing. During the trial, our teachers will have the opportunity to practice managing the classroom logistics for an online assessment and the new test administration processes.

The readiness test has not been constructed to assess curriculum knowledge, but rather to provide students with an opportunity to experience the types of questions that will be included in the new online assessments. As such, reports will not be provided.

Participation in the SRT is a key step to ensuring a successful NAPLAN online experience in 2019.

Room 15 – Blue Group

This week in Room 15 we were fortunate enough to participate in an incursion with Urban Indigenous called “A LITTLE BIT OF THIS, A LITTLE BIT OF THAT.”

Our students participated in an interesting mix on Aboriginal Cultural activities. These included: listening to stories, having their faces painted and painting a canvas using traditional tools such as honkey nuts. The session ended with students getting to eat some delicious bush tucker – Lemon Myrtle Cake!

Chaplain Chatter

Hi everyone, as we continue to look at good character traits, the next one can be particularly difficult.

Quality Character #17 Obedience; a voluntary action in following a command or an authority. Submitting oneself to that of another person. Obedience is not an optional quality. A lack of obedience results in personal destruction. Wood ducks provide a profound illustration of obedience. Although the eggs are laid over an eleven-day period, they all hatch within a few minutes of each other in response to their mother’s call. Shortly thereafter, the mother stands at the base of the tree and calls out for the ducklings to jump. Those that obey find safety in nearby ponds. Those that disobey perish in the abandoned nest.

Yes, sometimes obedience is difficult, but the fruit or reward usually follows later. Food for thought.

Have a brilliant week everyone. Be sharp and take care.

Chaplain’s Challenge

Hi everyone. On Thursday 9th August we hosted a BBQ breakfast and ran the “Great Land Yacht Race”, as part of our Fathering Project. I would like to say a special thank you and well done to all the Dads, Father Figures and Mums that helped their child/ren to build a land yacht. It was great fun to see so many people attend the BBQ and the race. The yachts showed the effort and time that was put into them, but also your child. It's always exciting to see family together and having a good time, making a fond memory. We didn't just have one winner, but you all were for being there and joining in the fun.

Again, thank you so much for joining in the challenge and spending that invaluable time with your children. Take care and keep safe. I look forward to the next time where our Dads, Father Figures and important adults and kids can get together and have some fun.
