Dear Families and Friends,

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope all of our students and families had a chance to enjoy the recent school holiday break even with all of the wild weather and rain we experienced. We have hit the ground running with a very busy start to the term, and there is a lot more learning and fun to come. This term we celebrate Book Week and Father’s Day. In addition to this, Term 3 always sees sporting events take centre stage with our Faction and Interschool Athletics Carnivals. Edu-Dance practice is well underway and we will finish the term with our Edu Dance Concert and Open Night in week 9 of term.

Staff Retirements

It is with mixed emotions we inform our school community of a recent retirement and upcoming retirement of two cherished members of our staff. At the end of last term our wonderful Library Officer Mrs Innes announced her retirement after working in the BPS school Library for many, many years. It was also recently announced that our Byford Community Kindy Teacher Mrs Marshall will be retiring after 43 years in education, and 28 years at the Byford Community Kindy. Both ladies have contributed so much to our school over the years and will be dearly missed. We wish them all the best for the next part of their lives. Information on a farewell for Mrs Marshall has been posted to the Byford Community Kindy Facebook page.

Projected Enrolments / Planning for 2023

We have reached the time of the year when we start our planning for the following year. At this stage I am just asking if families could please inform the school if they know they will not be returning to Byford PS next year. This information helps us greatly with our planning for staffing and class structures.

In the next Newsletter I will include information on how to submit any class placement requests for your children in 2023.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability.

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • Year of schooling
  • Category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • Level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • Formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • Consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • Develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides states and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students in ensured.

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal https://www.nccd.edu.au

It was a wonderful week of learning about and celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people during NAIDOC Week last term.  The theme was Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!

Students participated in several in-class activities including yarning, face painting, bracelet weaving and some cultural cooking.  The children and staff looked great in their NAIDOC shirts and cultural colours.

Students competed in Football, Netball and Soccer at our recent Winter Carnival at the end of Term 2, Thursday 30th June. Students enjoyed a fun day of sports, improving their skills and representing their school with pride. It was fantastic to see a high standard of sportsmanship and great spirit amongst the teams. The football, netball and soccer teams were well supported and organised by Mr G, Miss Winmar, Miss Marchetti and Mr Way. We thank them for their efforts.

It was great to see so many family and friends who came to support our teams and cheer from the sidelines. This created a good atmosphere around the grounds. Thank you!

A big congratulations to all the students involved in what was a successful day!

A huge congratulations to our Year 6 Netball team. The team demonstrated great skills and team work, winning the competition undefeated! Awesome effort!

Year 5 Netball team competed hard all day for a good 3rd place finish.

Our Soccer team grew in confidence and improved in each game throughout the day, achieving 3rd place.

The standard at the football competition was high, which is great to see, and our Football team played some fantastic football for a 3rd place finish.

All students did our school proud and competed well to achieve these great results.

Congratulations and well done!

In Room 10, we have been using our inquiry and research skills to create Information Reports. Students learnt how to create research questions, take notes and summarise their research. They then chose an animal to use for their final research task and used all their knowledge to create their Information Reports. They did an amazing job and really enjoyed learning about all the different animals.

Ms Casey Winmar

Classroom Teacher

In science over the last semester the Year 5/6 students have been putting their inquiry skills into practice. Last term our topic was electricity, in small groups students from Room 9, 10 and 13 investigated sustainable methods of generating electricity. They developed questions, researched and presented their findings on posters. Students were able to apply their skills that they had been learning for writing information texts in class.

The World Is Your Oyster

Hi everyone. Term 3 is well in motion. Below is something to chew on mentally.

Ability is what you are capable of doing.

Motivation determines what you do.

Attitude determines how well you do it.

By Lou Holtz

Pearls come from oysters, but not all oysters contain pearls.

The overall idea is: Even though it will be hard work, if we keep at it, we will receive a reward.

Food for thought.

Have a good week everyone and let’s keep looking ahead.

Year 6 Camp Fundraisers

The Year 6 Fundraising Committee would like to thank the Byford Primary School families for their continued support of our current and upcoming fundraisers.  All proceeds from these events and competitions will be going towards the 2022 Year 6 camp.

Guess How Many in the Jar Competition

Lolly_Jar.jpg

Lakeside Fresh IGA have kindly donated two jars filled with yummy treats for our Guess How Many in the Jar competition – one filled with Marshmallows and the other filled with lollies.  As you may already know, Student Councillors have been selling numbers for $1 a guess, during lunch time throughout the week.  The student who correctly guesses how many marshmallows or lollies in the jar will win the respective jar.  Winners will be announced over the PA and on the Facebook page, once all numbers have been sold.  Good luck.

PJ Day

PJ_Day.jpg

It’s perfect weather to get those flannelette pyjamas and Oodies on for PJ Day, which is being held on Friday, 5 August 2022, for a gold coin donation.

School Disco

The Year 6 Fundraising Committee will be hosting a school disco after school on Friday, 26 August 2022.  There will be 2 sessions – one for lower primary and one for upper primary.  Further information will be advertised on the school’s Facebook page, and notes will be sent home soon – so watch this space.  We look forward to seeing as many students as we can grooving on the dancefloor at this event!

Father’s Day Stall

The Father’s Day Stall will be held during week 7 – further information will be announced closer to the event.

 5 Cent Coin Competition

5cents.jpg

Congratulations to Room 10 for collecting the most 5 cent coins.  They enjoyed a pizza treat during the last week of Term 2, proudly donated by Dominos Byford, for their fundraising efforts.

Zooper Dooper Thursdays

Zooper_Dooper.jpg

Zooper Doopers are continually being sold on Thursdays for 50c each and even though the weather is cooler, let’s be honest, it’s never too cold for an icy pole when you’re a kid!  We’re always in need of Zooper Doopers to continue this fundraising venture and are very appreciative of donations.  If you can help please drop Zooper Doopers to the senior block.

Containers for Change

Containers_for_Change.png

We’ve joined the Containers for Change team to raise money for the year 6 camp, whilst helping to make a real difference to the environment.  This will roll over to  the Year 6 Fundraising Committee every year.  Donation bins have been placed in the undercover, blue court and pre-primary areas for students to donate their used water/drink bottles, juice and milk boxes (please look out for the 10c icon on the side of the container).  If you wish to donate containers from your household, please quote our Scheme ID #C10425624 when you drop off your containers to the recycle drop-off points and the funds will automatically get deposited into our fundraising account.

Hat_Sun.png

A ‘No Hat, Limited Outside Play’ policy is enforced at Byford Primary School all year.  Parents can assist us by reinforcing the need for protection from the sun by ensuring that students have a wide brim hat. Hats can be purchased through the school uniform shop next to Room 3.  Students who do not have a hat are instructed to play under sheltered areas such as the Undercover Area near the canteen. Caps are not acceptable as they do not provide adequate protection to the ears and back of the neck from the sun.
