Principal’s Report
Dear Families and Friends
Thank you for taking the time to read our school newsletter. We have just over a week left of this term! Looking back over the term I noticed that week 2 of term was the only week that our students weren’t involved in an additional activity that supplemented their in-class learning. One of the highlights for me, was interacting with our Year 5 students who nominated themselves to be considered for 2020 School Captain positions. These students had to write a letter to outline why they felt they would make a good School Captain, to myself and the administration team. In small groups they attended an interview session with the administration team and a member of the School Board. The final step in the process was to present a speech to the Year 3 – 6 students. The students from Year 3 – 5 then voted for who they thought would best represent the school. At the EduDance concert our two 2020 School Captains will be announced and they will then be mentored by our current school captains, Alex and Nakyla, during Term 4.
I look forward to a very busy Term 4.
Health and Physical Education Day 2019
On Thursday 12th Sept we celebrated Health and Phys Ed Day. All our students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 and our staff, joined together for a whole school picnic. Our picnic theme was 'Nude Food' or 'Litter free lunch.' The amount of lunchtime rubbish was reduced by well over half of what is usually disposed. Thank you very much to all our parents who supported us in this challenge.
This was followed by an extended lunchtime play with a variety of special movement games. A great time was had by all students and teachers. A big thank you to Miss Marchetti and Mr Way for organising the lunch time event and to the staff for running the games session.
After such a successful reduction in rubbish, we will be commencing Waste Free Wednesdays next term.

Taking and Sharing Photos – especially on social media
With Athletics carnival and EduDance concert nearly upon us, I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents about being careful when you are taking and sharing photos.
Sharing photos or video content filmed onsite at school or a school event on social media may cause serious privacy issues for other students.
Parents and third-party contractors are not authorised to use such images unless specific permissions are signed by the parents of each child appearing on that party’s social media accounts.
This is not the decision of the school to say it is ok unless parents have signed off on what is advertising using their child’s image. This may become a duty of care issue for a school.
In the eyes of the law, a school is considered a private place, and the Principal is regarded as the manager of that private place. When a media release document is signed, and in place, Students, Parents, and Third-Party contractors need the express permission of a Principal before publishing any photos taken onsite at the school, or just outside the school, in uniform, on excursions, etc. This includes posting on social media and why there is “no publish” lists in most schools.
Taking photos of students at school and posting them to Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram etc. is publishing without consent and can cause issues from a duty of care perspective if the photo is taken wearing school uniform, onsite at the school, tagged into the school or on an excursion. Custody issues, Court Orders, Children In Care etc. also need to be considered.
The school is fine with you taking photos up close of your child only, but please be aware that you do not know what is happening in the lives of the children in the background. We understand that it is difficult to only get your child in the photo so please, before placing them on social media, make sure that you crop the photos so only your child appears in it.

Immunisation Requirements for Children Enrolling at School
The Western Australian Government has amendment the Public Health Act 2016 and the School Education Act 1999 (WA) to introduce requirements for enrolment into child care services, community kindergartens and schools. These changes take effect as of 22 July 2019.
When enrolling your child at school you will need to provide:
- an AIR Immunisation History Statement no more than two months old; or
- an AIR Immunisation History Form no more than six months old, only if the child is on a catch-up schedule, or
- a valid immunisation certificate issued or declared by the Chief Health Officer (see the school or your GP for more information)
Children enrolling in Kindergarten must be up to date with all scheduled immunisations for their age to be able to enrol.
All children can be enrolled in the compulsory years of schooling (Pre-primary to Year 12) regardless of their immunisation status.
AIR Immunisation History Statement
A child’s current AIR Immunisation History Statement can be accessed at any time by the parent/guardian through:
- MyGov, by logging in to their Medicare online account
- Medicare Express Plus App, by logging into their Medicare account
- Visiting a Medicare or Centrelink office, or
- Calling the AIR General Enquiries Line on 1800 653 809 to request an AIR the Statement to be posted
Vaccine exemption due to medical reasons or natural immunity
If a child cannot receive one or more vaccines for certain medical reasons or the child has natural immunity, parents need to contact their GP in the first instance. If a vaccine exemption is warranted, the medical practitioner needs to advise the AIR online or by completing and submitting the AIR – Immunisation Medical Exemption Form. Children who have a valid medical exemption to vaccination or natural immunity will have an immunisation status that is recorded as ‘up to date’ on their AIR Immunisation History Statement.
Children who are exempt
Parents/carers may apply to the Principal of the school for an exemption because of family circumstances if the child:
- is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
- is in the care of the CEO of the Department of Communities
- is living in crisis or emergency accommodation because of family violence or a risk of family violence, or homelessness
- has been evacuated from their ordinary place of residence because it is in an area of the State to which a declaration made under the Emergency Management Act 2005, section 56 applies
- is in the care of an adult, other than the child’s parent or guardian, because of exceptional circumstances
- Is in the care of a responsible person who holds a valid:
- health care card
- pensioner concession card
- Veterans’ Affairs white card
- Veterans’ Affairs gold card
First entered Australia not more than 6 months before the time of enrolment and holds or parent holds, one of the following visa subclasses: 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 785, 790, or 866.
If you have any questions or require support, please contact the school or the Department of Health.

Room 15 - Science in Kindergarten
Throughout Term 3 we have completed a variety of hands-on learning experiences about ourselves, plants and some animal lifecycles, as we have investigated the concept of life and living. We explored our bodies through non-fictional text, stories, craft, puzzle play, music and movement and were able to play with real hospital equipment when we participated in a Hospital Incursion Program and changed our dramatic play area into a hospital setting. We have planted some seedlings in our garden bed and have grown our own grass heads as we explore the concept of plant lifecycles and their features. Finally, we have begun to investigate the lifecycle of frogs and butterflies and have changed our dramatic play centre to a veterinarian clinic as we learn to care for our pets and other animals. On Monday the 9th September we went tadpoling in our local rainforest area and are now using our senses to observe their changes over time.

LOTE
Year 3 students in Rooms 1 and 14 have been playing matching card games in preparation for their family booklets that they will be doing at the beginning of Term 3. Students will be drawing and writing about family members in Italian, including which family member they are, their name and age and some adjectives about them. In the card game they were matching various questions that would be used to find out about a person and answers that gave information about a person in English and Italian. Room 1 also enjoyed rehearsing sentences that they will be using in their booklets with puppets.
