Protective Behaviours
This term classes will be covering the topic of ‘protective behaviours’. Each year level has a different focus and lessons are designed for the age of the children. These programs encourage the learning and development of skills for life in order for children to feel, be and keep safe. Please talk to your children about this at home. If you would like more information about what specifics are being taught, please contact the class teacher.
Book Week
Friday 23rd August is Book Week dress up day. The theme this year is “Reading Is My Secret Power”. Students can either wear a costume to represent the theme or dress up as their favourite character in a book.
Immunisation Requirements for Children Enrolling at School
The Western Australian Government has amendment the Public Health Act 2016 and the School Education Act 1999 (WA) to introduce requirements for enrolment into child care services, community kindergartens and schools. These changes take effect as of 22 July 2019.
When enrolling your child at school you will need to provide:
- an AIR Immunisation History Statement no more than two months old; or
- an AIR Immunisation History Form no more than six months old, only if the child is on a catch-up schedule, or
- a valid immunisation certificate issued or declared by the Chief Health Officer (see the school or your GP for more information)
Children enrolling in Kindergarten must be up to date with all scheduled immunisations for their age to be able to enrol.
All children can be enrolled in the compulsory years of schooling (Pre-primary to Year 12) regardless of their immunisation status.
AIR Immunisation History Statement
A child’s current AIR Immunisation History Statement can be accessed at any time by the parent/guardian through:
- MyGov, by logging in to their Medicare online account
- Medicare Express Plus App, by logging into their Medicare account
- Visiting a Medicare or Centrelink office, or
- Calling the AIR General Enquiries Line on 1800 653 809 to request an AIR the Statement to be posted
Vaccine exemption due to medical reasons or natural immunity
If a child cannot receive one or more vaccines for certain medical reasons or the child has natural immunity, parents need to contact their GP in the first instance. If a vaccine exemption is warranted, the medical practitioner needs to advise the AIR online or by completing and submitting the AIR – Immunisation Medical Exemption Form. Children who have a valid medical exemption to vaccination or natural immunity will have an immunisation status that is recorded as ‘up to date’ on their AIR Immunisation History Statement.
Children who are exempt
Parents/carers may apply to the Principal of the school for an exemption because of family circumstances if the child:
- is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
- is in the care of the CEO of the Department of Communities
- is living in crisis or emergency accommodation because of family violence or a risk of family violence, or homelessness
- has been evacuated from their ordinary place of residence because it is in an area of the State to which a declaration made under the Emergency Management Act 2005, section 56 applies
- is in the care of an adult, other than the child’s parent or guardian, because of exceptional circumstances
- Is in the care of a responsible person who holds a valid:
- health care card
- pensioner concession card
- Veterans’ Affairs white card
- Veterans’ Affairs gold card
First entered Australia not more than 6 months before the time of enrolment and holds or parent holds, one of the following visa subclasses: 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 785, 790, or 866.
If you have any questions or require support, please contact the school or the Department of Health.

STEAM Day
On Thursday 4th July, Byford Primary School had our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) Day. Students worked in groups across the school to complete specialised STEAM activities to develop their skills and showcase the latest technological equipment our school has invested in. To view a video of the day’s activities, please click here:

Art Room
On Tuesday the 23rd of July the school had three lovely visitors in the form of Aboriginal Art Muralists Bec, Katelyn and Gracie. All three women helped to create our new painted mural on the outside wall of the undercover area, it is of the serpent between the earth and water, amongst flowers and Aboriginal symbols of people. The “U - shape” symbol is representative of a person as it is literally the shape left by a person after they have been sitting on the sand. Selected students from each year level were chosen to hear the story be told by Gracie and contribute to the painting’s lower levels.

Room 13 – Buddies
This year we are doing pre-primary buddies with Room 12!
We chose games and wrote up the rules and equipment. When we joined up with our pre-primary buddies, we had to teach them how to play our games. The Easter themed games included: Bunny-Hopping, Rob the nest, Duck, duck goose, Musical Hoops, Colour Hoops and Cat and Mouse. We had 6, 5 minute rotations. We had lots of fun!
The next time that we joined our buddies, we were split into two groups. One group made paper straw rockets and the other group tested which surfaces were the best for making cars go fast. We tested ramps, concrete, grass and sand. We had two rotations and at the end we got to test out our rockets. It was pretty windy, which made it a bit tricky!
All of the pre-primaries had lots of fun with the year 5’s and 6’s, especially while playing the games. We all had lots of fun playing games and pretending to be in pre-primary again!
Here are some of our thoughts…
I enjoyed playing with the pre-primaries, explaining how to play the game and demonstrating how to play! Madison
