Principal’s Report

Dear Families and Friends

We are half way through Term 2 already! We have a very busy second half of the term coming up with photos, fun run, cross country and of course student reports. Please note that we will be sending student reports home via email, so please make sure you have provide the school with your current email address.

The tree loppers and arborist have attended to our beautiful big tree by the undercover area. They have lopped some branches to try and make it as safe as possible. We will continually monitor the health of the tree.

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islands Incursion

On Wednesday 29th May, Byford Primary School was lucky to have Ryka Ali “Kadul’ visit our school and treat our staff and students to an amazing performance. His performance helped us learn more about the Indigenous culture, including traditional artifacts, musical instruments and costumes. It was a lot of fun listening to songs and watching him dance. Our students (and staff) got to participate and join in the dancing and playing of instruments. We would love to have Ryka back in future years. We will have more photos and video to view in our next newsletter so stay tuned.

R U Legal CyberBullying

On Monday 27th May, our Year 5 and Year 6 classes completed an informative CyberBullying session, presented by a team of lawyers from the R U Legal Education Team. The aim of this special presentation was to help teach our students about CyberBullying, how it impacts on individuals, the serious nature of these behaviours and how they can have criminal consequences.

Cyberbullying is any form of bullying that is done online, using a mobile phone for inappropriate texting, chatting or messaging or verbally harassing over the phone. It is against the law to use a phone or internet service in a way that is menacing, harassing or offensive.

The students also discussed the use of online website accounts such as Facebook and Instagram, for which primary school students are not old enough to register for.

It was great to see some of our parents attend a special after school parent presentation which explained the age of consent, parental responsibilities for children online and provided support for parents with some tips and tools to help keep their children safe online.

A fantastic resource for further information is the ‘ESafety Commission’ and their website...

Interschool Winter Lightning Carnival

The Interschool Winter Lightning carnival is being held on Friday 7th June at the Mundijong Town Oval/Courts for soccer, football and netball. If your child is participating they are required to dress in the school sports uniform. Students are strongly recommended to bring a water bottle and food for a snack and lunch if they have not pre-ordered. It may be necessary to have a towel and change of clothes in the event of rain. It would be great to see lots of family and friends come along and support the Byford Primary School teams.

School Photos

It is that time of the year when we have our school photos taken. The photo team will be at school on Monday 10th & Tuesday 11th June in Week 7 this term. The photo order forms have been sent home. Monday is our main photo day when all class photos will be taken along with the majority of individual and family photos. Tuesday will be a catch up day for students who were away on Monday and to complete family photos if required. If you are interested in having a family photo taken, the envelopes are available in the front office for collection.

If you are going to order any photos you will need to choose the option you like, include the money or complete the credit details and send the envelope to school with your child on Monday 10th June.

If you do not wish to order any photos you will still need to send the order envelope to school with your child as the bar code on it is used to scan their name into the computer just before their class photo and individual photo is taken.

For students who have a split family situation it is the responsibility of the custodial parent to pass the information on to the other parent about school photos. Each individual parent is responsible for organising to order the photos they may be interested in. Spare order forms are available at the front office for this purpose.

Please ensure that your child has the correct school uniform for photo day.

Faction Cross Country

On Friday 21st June we look forward to a morning of Faction Cross Country, with students from years 3 to 6 running 1000m and 1500m at school, earning points for their faction. Good luck everyone!

The Interschool Cross Country for those students selected, will be held at the Serpentine Pony Club on Wednesday 26th June 2019.

Kindergarten & Pre-Primary - Applications to Enrol for 2020

Byford Primary School is now taking enrolment applications for students entering Kindergarten and Pre Primary in 2020. Both Byford Primary School and Byford Community Kindergarten will be offering a Kindergarten program in 2020. When completing an application to enrol for Kindergarten, parents will be asked to nominate which program they wish to apply for. Your child can only enrol in one of these programs.

Children born between July 1 2015 & June 30 2016 are eligible to apply for Public School Kindergarten.

Children born between July 1 2014 & June 30 2015 are eligible to apply for Public School Pre Primary.

When making an application for enrolment, please bring a copy of;

  • Your child’s birth certificate
  • Passport and Visa Grant Notice if born overseas
  • Proof of residential address (eg utility bill, lease agreement);
  • ACIR immunisation records, and

Application forms are also available on our website at the link below or can be obtained from the Front Office.

https://byfordps.wa.edu.au/

Application forms for Pre Primary 2020 will be sent out to our current Kindergarten students. Parents of children currently attending Kindergarten programs this year (2019) must apply at the school for Pre Primary placement in 2020 if you wish your child to continue attending Byford Primary School. Please note, students residing outside our catchment area may still apply, however your application may not be successful.

Students in Pre Primary in 2019 will automatically roll over into Year 1 in 2020 and beyond. If your child will not be returning to Byford Primary School in 2020, please notify the School Office.

It should be noted that an application does not confirm placement for any child – selection criteria may apply. Application details will be used to assist the school in organising classes and placements for next year. Parents of children who are offered placement at Byford Primary School will be asked to complete formal enrolment details at that time. Unsuccessful applicants will be offered a place in a school as close to their residential location as possible or be referred to their local school in the case of Pre Primary students.

Applications required by Friday 26th July 2019.

All applicants will be advised of their child’s placement during Term 3 this year. Enrolment applications can be made through the school office between the hours of 9.30am to 2:30pm.

NAPLAN Years 3 & 5

Our Year 3 and 5 students have concluded their NAPLAN tests. There were numerous reports in the media regarding the interruptions that some schools experienced. Byford Primary School only experienced very minor interruptions and did not impact on the sitting of the tests. Therefore, none of our students have had to resit the tests. Many thanks to Mr Way and Ms Doncon who planned and prepared for the successful implementation of NAPLAN testing. Our Year 3 and 5 teachers and students also did a wonderful job during this time. With the assessments conducted online, we are expecting results early Term 3.

Car Park

We are undertaking some work in the staff carpark to make it safer for our students and for those who park in it. We have painted some NO PARKING signs on the bitumen and erected some signage. The next project in the area is to erect additional bollards and to paint a zebra crossing where the students cross near the gate / fire hydrant box. We ask all parents to take care in this area and around the school when you are dropping off and picking children up. Our number one concern is the safety of our students. I thank you for your support with this.

Room 4 & 5

On Friday, May 31st, rooms 4 and 5 went to Kalamunda History Village to learn about pioneering life. We experienced the old school classroom and wrote on slate boards. We explored the old train station, the general store, a post office, a house, the blacksmith and a dunny. We washed clothes the old fashioned way by scrubbing with a washboard and rinsing in a tub. We had a great time pretending to drive the old fire engine, the steam train and playing with lots of old games. Everyone brought a piece of fruit along and we watched the giant fruit grading machine sort them by size.

Library Bags

All students MUST have a library bag when borrowing books from the Library. Please make sure your child has a suitable library bag that will protect our precious books from damage.

Chaplain Chatter

How are you traveling today? Do you have tough decisions to make or concerns that seem to stretch you to breaking point? Who can you turn to? Usually, someone that has already walked that path is a good choice. They can either help you through it or at least give you some wise advise. Do you have a mentor? Have you ever thought of getting a mentor? Food for thought.
