Principal’s Report

Dear Families and Friends

Thank you to all our parents for your efforts of getting the swimming money and forms in ready for our first day of swimming on Monday 22nd October. It was a great effort. Our students travel to Kwinana for swimming due to the Armadale pool being closed.

On Wednesday night I had the privilege of attending the inaugural Valedictory Awards evening for Byford Secondary College. It was fantastic to see our first group of Byford students graduate from Byford Secondary College. Congratulation to all our past students.

Interschool Throws, Jumps & 400m

On Tuesday 16th the Interschool throws, jumps and 400m were held at Byford Primary School. In attendance were Marri Grove PS, West Byford PS, Woodland Grove PS and Byford PS. All students were very well behaved, represented their school proudly and tried their best at their event. It was great to see students interacting with their peers from other local Byford schools and building our community spirit. This was a fantastic event to kick off our Athletics competition, which was completed on Wednesday 24th at Byford Primary.

Kindergarten & Pre Primary Information Sessions - Reminder

Parents/Guardians of children who have been accepted and will be attending Kindergarten and Pre Primary at Byford Primary School in 2019 are invited to attend an information session.

Pre Primary Session is Tuesday 27th November 2018 at 2:00 - 3:00pm. At this session you will be given an information package and be able to have a look at our facilities. Please come to the Front Office and you will be directed to Room 12. During this term your child will participate in orientation sessions during the school day as part of the transition program. For this reason children do not need to attend the parent session.

Kindergarten Session is Thursday 29th November 2018 at 9:00 - 10:00am. At this time, children will participate in an orientation activity. Please come to the Front Office and we will direct you to where these activities will take place. You will be provided with an information package for 2019 on this day.

Families who have applied for the Community Kindergarten program at Park Road will be invited to an information session at a later date, still to be confirmed.

Planning for 2019 - Reminder

Planning for 2019 is well under way. As the area that Byford PS caters for is growing, it is very important that we are aware of students who will be leaving and any new enrolments. This will enable us to plan the correct number of classes for 2019.

I would very much appreciate if you could please let the Front Office know if your child/ren will not be returning to Byford PS in 2019. If you know of any families moving into the area, please encourage them to come and enrol their child/ren as soon as possible.

If you have a particular class placement request for 2019 this must be put in writing by Friday 9th Nov and you are required to outline the educational reason for this request. Wherever possible, I try to fill requests that have an education reason. These requests need to be emailed directly to myself on the following email address: Suzanne.heath@education.wa.edu.au.

When formulating classes some of the things we take into account are; the number of males / females, a spread of academic ability, a range of behaviours, personalities, relationships with other students and which teachers would best suit the individual or groups of children. Teachers spend a lot of time and effort in considering where students are placed and look at the best interest of the individual as well as groups of children.

2018 Parent Survey

Thank you to all the parents who completed the survey. We appreciate you taking the time to fill it in. The data will be collated and presented to the School Board and the recommendations will be included in our planning for 2019.

Room 15 – Green Group

Kindy Green has been learning about Australian animals. One of our favourite stories was 'Wombat Stew' by Marcia Vaughan. After we read the story we were inspired to make our own wombat stew. We found some ingredients like gumnuts, sticks, sand and leaves. We read the recipe, counted, measured and mixed the ingredients and then tasted our stew. Some tasted delicious and others not so tasty. It was great fun making our own Wombat Stew.

Jump Rope for Heart

Jump Rope for Heart kicks off this term!

Jump Rope for Heart is a fantastic physical activity and fundraising program that has been run by the Heart Foundation for 35 years. It’s a great way for your child to keep fit and learn new skills, but it also helps raise funds for vital heart research and education programs.

Since Jump Rope for Heart started in 1983, schools like ours have raised more than $75 million for the Heart Foundation’s lifesaving work.

It’s important you register your child online, so they can receive the full benefits of the program and participate in online fundraising, simply follow the link below to get started.

https://jumprope.heartfoundation.org.au/2018/Byford_Primary_School_-_BYFORD_WA_-_132215

Students will be skipping throughout the term in PE lessons; during this time you can share their online fundraising page with family and friends to help raise money for this great cause.

We will hold our school Jump Off Day in Week 8 in PE class times, this will mark the end of the program and is a chance for everyone to come together to skip and show off their newly learned skills.

Thank you for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program!

Chaplain Chatter

Hi everyone. Here is an amazing true story. You never know your luck.

In 1965, 4-year-old Roger Lausier had waded into the ocean and off a ledge into deep water over his head. He tried to yell but the water began to choke him. At that instant Alice Blaise pulled him up. She had noticed the boy wander off, something the parents missed by being distracted for just one moment. Roger’s parents were grateful to Alice because they got their son back.

The family continued to vacation year after year at the same beach. Nine years later, when Roger was 13 years old, he had become a very good swimmer. One day that summer, Roger noticed a man out in the ocean who was struggling and yelling for help. Roger took his air raft and floated it beside himself and swam out to the man. Roger helped the man to lay across the raft and towed it back to shore. Only after the rescue did Roger discover the man’s identity; he was Alice Blaise’s husband. You never know how what you do today could come back to you tomorrow? Food for thought.

Have a great week. Be thoughtful and hopeful. Our feelings will follow our will which is driven by our minds.

Chaplain
