Dear Families and Friends
Newsletter Upgrade
We are in the process of updating our newsletter to a new online format, so please be patient with us while we are transitioning. Our goal for the beginning of 2018 is to have parents accessing the newsletter by email or online. We will still produce a small number of hard copies and supply these to our families who do not have online access.

Planning for 2018
Planning for 2018 is well under way. As the area that Byford PS caters for is growing, it is very important that we are aware of students who will be leaving and any new enrolments. This will enable us to plan the correct number of classes for 2018.
I would very much appreciate if you could please let the front office know if your child/ren will not be returning to Byford PS in 2018. If you know of any families moving into the area, please encourage them to come and enrol their child/ren as soon as possible.
If you have a class placement request for 2018, please put it in writing to myself with an educational reason to support your request. I will endeavour to fill your request but this is not always possible. The requests need to be received by Friday 10th November 2017.
End of Year Book Prizes
At the End of Year Concert a number of awards are presented to students who have made significant gains in their education. Parents, businesses and organisations are invited to donate a contribution towards the cost of these prizes. All donations are acknowledged. If you are interested in making a donation, please contact the front office.

Room 7’s Visit to Kings Park
On Friday the 8th September Room 7 went to Kings Park to do two activities, one was called Orienteering and the other was Firesticks to Fireworks. Heather was asking the class what we thought kangaroo skin was used for. I said they used it for clothing. Aboriginals used boomerangs to scare kangaroos out from behind the bushes or trees. They then speared them and ate them. By Charlotte
My favourite part of the Kings Park Excursion was getting three natural objects and tying them together with colourful pieces of string. This was a fire stick which we were able to keep to remember our Learning Journey at Kings Park. By Luis
In the photo a lady named Heather is talking about how the Noongar People made weapons such as an axe. Heather said they would get a very long stick, sharpen a stone and make their own glue. The main ingredient was kangaroo poo. I had a lot of fun on our excursion to Kings Park. By Alex
Heather is explaining what the aboriginals used the paper bark tree for. They use the paper bark tree for band aids and to cook fish in. By Jessica

Chaplain Chatter
Hi everyone, the term is well under way and it has been great to talk with students, parents and staff about their holidays and life in general. It has been a privilege and encouraging listening to your stories. Thank you.
I have a Chaplain's Challenge for all the students this term. They can earn themselves 1000 points just by competing in the "Ramp and Roller." I have the ramp, your mission is to build the roller. Students will build their 'Roller' in their own time, after school and weekends. The challenge will be held in Week 9 so that you all have time to think and build a roller. I will provide the ramp; it will be 1 meter high and 2 meters long. Your roller will be placed at the top of the ramp and let go. Gravity will take over and the aim is to see how far your roller rolls. The longest roll wins.
First prize - $20 gift
voucher
Second prize - 750 points
Third prize - 500 points
Fourth prize - 250 points
Guidelines for building your roller:
- Students should put the majority of effort into the build. Parent help is allowed, it could be a good bonding time. The idea is to recycle, reuse pieces of wood, Lego, old toys, the list goes on. The design is only limited by your imagination.
- The roller has to have at least 3 wheels, not be purchased like a remote car or be powered by anything except gravity.
The challenge will happen in the undercover area. More reminders and info will be given to the classroom teachers. You can ask me as well.
Let the challenge begin! Have fun and I look forward to seeing your ideas come to life.
