Dear Families and Friends,

Welcome to the first Newsletter for 2024. I have been incredibly pleased with how well the students and staff have jumped straight into the teaching and learning program with such enthusiasm. We are looking forward to a great year ahead, and we thank our entire school community for their support during the first couple of weeks of the school year.

School Calendar

We have finalised dates for most of our major school events this year and have updated the school calendar. You can access the school calendar from the front page of the school website https://byfordps.wa.edu.au/.

Before School Procedures

A reminder that classroom doors do not open until 8:35am, with class commencing at 8:45am. We do not recommend that students arrive at school any earlier than 8:30am, and that playgrounds and equipment are not used before school as we have limited staff available for duty. If your child does have to arrive at school earlier than 8:30am due to work commitments, there will be a member of staff on duty in the undercover area from 8:15am. All students who are at school prior to 8:35am without a parent or guardian present on the school grounds is required to go to the undercover area so they can be supervised. We thank you for your continued support with this to ensure the safety of all our students.

P & C

It was wonderful to see some new faces at our AGM last night. Don’t forget that our supportive and hard-working P & C are always looking for new members and new faces are welcome at each meeting. The P & C play a vital role in the school through running the Canteen and Uniform shop, in addition to the many fundraisers they organise and run through the year, providing essential resources back into the school. If you are interested in joining the P & C this year but are a little unsure, or would like to know more about what is involved, feel free to pop into the office to speak with me, or contact our P & C president Annette Stones at byfordprimarypandc@hotmail.com. Many hands make light work!

The School Board is comprised of the School’s Principal, School Staff, and up to 10 elected Parent and Community representatives. The Parent, Community and Staff Representatives hold office for a period of two years from the time of their election. The role of the School Board is one of setting the long term future for the school and maintain oversight (not management) of the school’s operation. It is about providing additional expertise to help the school achieve the best outcomes for the students. It has been a whirlwind start to 2024. In Room 13 we have been getting to know each other, how we work best and what style of learning we use.

In class we have been making our brag book cover using half of our first day photos and drawing our other half as our ultra-ego. We have also been learning to adapt to the upper primary behaviour expectations.

In our technology lessons we have been focusing on building our Minecraft classroom’s that suit our personality and working areas. The year sixes have voted on the design for the leaver’s shirts for 2024.

As year sixes we are now the leaders of the school, and it is our responsibility to make sure others are treated respectfully and we always show the Byford Way.

The school councillors have had a leadership day on the 9th of Feb 2024. We did a lot of fun activities including spaghetti and marshmallow towers, defining what leadership is, problem-solving activities and getting to know the other school councillors.

Shade Sails

Have you seen the new shade sails around the school?

The P&C’s fundraising efforts enabled us to purchase the new shade sail you see at the entrance of Room 14.

And... after a successful grant application, the Bendigo Community Bank Byford & Districts fully funded the purchase and installation of the shade sails covering the playground in the Early Childhood education area.

Having these shade sails installed in our school grounds have created sun smart areas for our students, parents and school staff!

Huge thanks to Bendigo Community Bank Byford & Districts for your support!

Quiz Night

Don’t forget the P&C are hosting a Quiz Night on the 24th February, notes were sent home with information to purchase tickets and to order a grazing box for the night from 2 Little Grazers. Extra tickets can be purchased from the school office, ticket sales end 19th February. Hope to see you there.

Containers for Change

We’ve joined the Containers for Change team to raise money for the year 6 camp, whilst helping to make a real difference to the environment.  This will roll over to  the Year 6 Fundraising Committee every year.  Donation bins have been placed in the undercover, blue court and pre-primary areas for students to donate their used water/drink bottles, juice and milk boxes (please look out for the 10c icon on the side of the container).  If you wish to donate containers from your household, please quote our Scheme ID #C10425624 when you drop off your containers to the recycle drop-off points and the funds will automatically get deposited into our fundraising account.

Hat_Sun.png

A ‘No Hat, Limited Outside Play’ policy is enforced at Byford Primary School all year.  Parents can assist us by reinforcing the need for protection from the sun by ensuring that students have a wide brim hat. Hats can be purchased through the school uniform shop next to Room 3.  Students who do not have a hat are instructed to play under sheltered areas such as the Undercover Area near the canteen. Caps are not acceptable as they do not provide adequate protection to the ears and back of the neck from the sun.
