Welcome to our final Newsletter for Term 3. It is hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of another school term. I would like to congratulate all of our students and staff in Years 1 - 6 for a wonderful Athletics Carnival last week. I was very proud of the high level of participation and the sportsmanship displayed throughout the day. Congratulations to those students who took out individual medals and to Zeus for being overall winners on the day. A very big well done to all of our students and staff in our Early Years for holding a wonderful Family Sports Day this week as well. We were fortunate to have the weather hold off for us and it was so great to see the smiling faces on our Kindy and Pre-Primary students as they participated in races, relays and games.
Planning 2024
Part of our preparation for 2024 is class structures and placements. This can often be a stressful time for school staff and families. While we are planning class structures and placements it is important that we have as much information as possible to make informed decisions that best meet the needs of our students and school. Firstly, I ask that any families that are not planning on returning to Byford PS in 2024 to please let the office know. This will ensure that we have accurate projected enrolments and will hopefully reduce the risk of having to restructure classes once the school year commences. Secondly, if you have any class placement requests based on the educational needs of your child please also forward these onto me. It is important to note that with over 380 students it may not be possible to meet all requests, but all will be considered. Please email this required information to Byford.PS@education.wa.edu.au and attention it to Jody Harrington.
Edu Dance / Open Night / Book Fair
We look forward to welcoming family and friends to our Edu Dance Concert and Open Night on Wednesday 20th September. The concert will be the culmination of each classes hard work and practice over the term, and we look forward to seeing each dance. During the concert, the announcement of the School Captains for 2024 will also be made. Following the concert, families are invited into classrooms to see all of the wonderful work students have been doing this term. The Library will also be open for families to visit the Book Fair. This will be a wonderful way to end a very busy term. I hope to see you all there.
Vandalism and Anti-Social Behaviour
Unfortunately, over the last two terms we have been receiving an increasing number of reports of vandalism and anti-social and dangerous behaviour (e.g. groups of children/teens on top of buildings) on our school site out of hours and on the weekends. We have worked with the Department of Education building and facilities team over the year to make certain areas of our school more secure and are exploring this for the oval area, however, this will be a long term project due to the cost. The police and education department security have been notified each time and are supporting through patrols. I am asking for assistance from all in our school community to please report to the school anything suspicious or unsafe that you may see happening on the school site out of hours, and if you are able to please call Education Department security on 9264 4771 when you see it happening as they will be able to attend immediately. Thank you for help to ensure all are safe on our school site.

We had an outstanding day on Friday 1st September 2023! It was fantastic to see all the students enjoying their running races and trying their best, working together with their faction peers in the team games. Everyone participated with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. Students and staff looked amazing in their faction colours. Thank you to all the families who came along to cheer and support the students.
What’s been happening in Room 15 – Kindy?
This term in kindergarten we have been investigating the very big topic of Animals. We have looked at different animal groups, discussing features, lifecycles and characteristics of each group, and have enjoyed stories, songs and craft related to this topic. The children have completed a number of activities about different animal groups and our play centres have included an animal focus, including a vet play area, zoo duplo and animal figurines with varying construction sets. In our Science Centre we have been able to explore preserved minibeasts and small animals, allowing us to look closely at features and discuss our observations. In Week 8 we enjoyed a local visit to our wetlands to observe tadpoles and frogs in their natural habitat, as we discussed frog lifecycles. Yellow Group also had the opportunity to observe some minibeasts when they attended an incursion from Kids Nature Club.

Our Kindergarten (from the Byford Community Kindy and Byford PS) and Pre-primary children spent a wonderful morning participating in their sports day at the end of Term 3. The weather was glorious, allowing the morning events to run smoothly and for everyone to enjoy a family orientated picnic at the conclusion of the day’s program. Throughout the morning our students showed enthusiasm and a willingness to have a go, as they participated in a number of track and tabloid events. Well done to all!

Congratulations and well done to all
students who received Merit Awards.
Keep up the great work!

Faction Carnival Sausage Sizzle
A big shout out to Woolworths Byford for their donation of sausages and buns for our faction carnival lunch. $905 was raised and will go towards the cost of school programs and improvements to our school.
Thank you to the BPS community for supporting our fundraiser by purchasing lunch and to everyone who helped on the day, without you these fundraisers cannot happen.
Year 6 Camp Fundraisers
School Disco
A huge thank you to all those students who joined in on the disco fun on Friday, 11 August. DJ G played some great music for dancing and playing games to. We hope you all had as much fun as we did!! This fundraising event successfully raised just over $1,800 towards this year’s Year 6 Camp, so once again, we thank you for your support.
Father's Day Stall
The Father’s Day stall was held over 2 days during week 7, of Term 3. All classrooms had the opportunity to visit the stall throughout the day and purchase something special for their dad, uncle, grandfather – we hope they had a wonderful Father’s Day and enjoyed their special gifts. All proceeds from this stall kick started the new fundraising committee’s fundraising goal and will go towards the 2024 Year 6 Camp.
Containers for Change
We’ve joined the Containers for Change team to raise money for the year 6 camp, whilst helping to make a real difference to the environment. This will roll over to the Year 6 Fundraising Committee every year. Donation bins have been placed in the undercover, blue court and pre-primary areas for students to donate their used water/drink bottles, juice and milk boxes (please look out for the 10c icon on the side of the container). If you wish to donate containers from your household, please quote our Scheme ID #C10425624 when you drop off your containers to the recycle drop-off points and the funds will automatically get deposited into our fundraising account.

The 2023 Year 6 Fundraising Committee would like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to the Byford Primary School staff, families and committee members for their support of our fundraising events throughout the year. We successfully raised a grand total of $13,884.17 for this year’s Year 6 Camp, reducing the amount for families to pay to send their child for a week of fun activities for their last year of primary school. We’d like to wish the new fundraising committee all the best for their fundraising venture.

A ‘No Hat, Limited Outside Play’ policy is enforced at Byford Primary School all year. Parents can assist us by reinforcing the need for protection from the sun by ensuring that students have a wide brim hat. Hats can be purchased through the school uniform shop next to Room 3. Students who do not have a hat are instructed to play under sheltered areas such as the Undercover Area near the canteen. Caps are not acceptable as they do not provide adequate protection to the ears and back of the neck from the sun.
