Dear Families and Friends,

Welcome to the first Newsletter for 2023. I have been incredibly pleased with how well the students and staff have jumped straight into the teaching and learning program with such enthusiasm. We are looking forward to a great year ahead, and we thank our entire school community for their support during the first couple of weeks of the school year.

School Calendar

We are currently finalising dates for our major school events this year and updating the calendar weekly. Once all dates have been finalised I will post a dojo message to let the school community know. You can access the school calendar from the front page of the school website https://byfordps.wa.edu.au/

Before School Procedures

A reminder that classroom doors do not open until 8:35am, with class commencing at 8:45am. We do not recommend that students arrive at school any earlier than 8:30am, and that playgrounds and equipment are not used before school as we have limited staff available for duty. If your child does have to arrive at school earlier than 8:30am due to work commitments, there will be a member of staff on duty in the undercover area from 8:15am. All students who are at school prior to 8:35am without a parent or guardian present on the school grounds is required to go to the undercover area so they can be supervised. We thank you for your continued support with this to ensure the safety of all of our students.

P & C

It was wonderful to see so many new faces at our AGM late last year, and at our first committee meeting last night. Don’t forget that our supportive and hard-working P & C are always looking for new members and new faces are welcome at each meeting. The P & C play a vital role in the school through running the Canteen and Uniform shop, in addition to the many fundraisers they organise and run through the year, providing essential resources back into the school. If you are interested in joining the P & C this year but are a little unsure, or would like to know more about what is involved, feel free to pop into the office to speak with me, or contact our P & C president Annette Stones at byfordprimarypandc@hotmail.com. Many hands make light work!

BPS School Board

The Byford Primary School, School Board has two vacant parent position to fill this year. The School Board is comprised of the School’s Principal, School Staff, and up to 10 elected Parent and Community representatives. The Parent, Community and Staff Representatives hold office for a period of two years from the time of their election. The role of the School Board is one of setting the long term future for the school and maintaining oversight (not management) of the school’s operation. It is about providing additional expertise to help the school achieve the best outcomes for the students. More information on the role of the School Board and nomination forms has been posted to dojo, or can be collected from the front office. Nominations close on Wednesday 22nd February.

Welcome back to 2023. In Room 13 we have been looking at our personality and our emotions using the zones of regulation. We have been focusing on the different ways we like to learn and how to interact with our classmates.

Please enjoy finding out about the different personalities, alter egos and the way we feel and regulate our behaviour.

What is the role of our school nurse?

Community Health Nurses (nurses) deliver school health services in primary schools across Western Australia. They are employed by WA Country Health Services or Child and Adolescent Health Service (in metropolitan Perth). Nurses work with children, families and teachers within each school throughout the year. Most families will have had contact with these health services from birth (through neonatology and child health services).

Chaplain.jpg

Hello everyone. Happy New Year and welcome to 2023. My name is Joe Grida and I am the chaplain at Byford Primary School for 2023.

I trust that the holiday break went well for you. Sometimes things don’t go all that well. If so, join the club.

The family car broke down and had to get towed. Later that same day, in a different car, my wife and son were in a car accident. Fortunately, they weren’t injured. They were able to walk away shaken, but “thankful.”

Amazingly a kind and helpful stranger, who had observed the accident had already called the police, ambulance and tow truck by the time my wife and son were able to get out of the car and onto the footpath. He reassured them that they were okay and that everything was under control.

The downside, two cars out of action. Upside, they were okay.

Life isn’t all smooth sailing. Hopefully we can find gratitude in something, so that our hearts don’t harden to life.

I would like to remind everyone that my job description is pastoral care. I am here to help support the school community; that means staff, students, parents, guardians, administration and anybody else that is involved in helping to maintain the health and welfare of the students.

The Chaplaincy Service is freely available to you and the whole school community. It’s all about relationships and networking. Just like the car situations everyone has a part to play. The RAC, the tow truck, insurance companies, panel beaters, mechanic, medical people and administration who do the organising and more.

As the chaplain I work together with the principal, deputy principals, teachers, education assistants, parents, administration and other outside agencies to care for the school community.

I am looking forward to working with you all this year. I would like to close with a quote from Charles Dickens.

“Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires and a touch that never hurts.”

Zooper Doopers are continually being sold on Thursdays for 50c each.  We’re always in need of Zooper Doopers to continue this fundraising venture and are very appreciative of donations.  If you can help, please drop Zooper Doopers to the senior block.

Containers for Change

Containers_for_Change.png

We’ve joined the Containers for Change team to raise money for the year 6 camp, whilst helping to make a real difference to the environment.  This will roll over to  the Year 6 Fundraising Committee every year.  Donation bins have been placed in the undercover, blue court and pre-primary areas for students to donate their used water/drink bottles, juice and milk boxes (please look out for the 10c icon on the side of the container).  If you wish to donate containers from your household, please quote our Scheme ID #C10425624 when you drop off your containers to the recycle drop-off points and the funds will automatically get deposited into our fundraising account.

Please DO NOT use this account for P&C payments

Hat_Sun.png

A ‘No Hat, Limited Outside Play’ policy is enforced at Byford Primary School all year.  Parents can assist us by reinforcing the need for protection from the sun by ensuring that students have a wide brim hat. Hats can be purchased through the school uniform shop next to Room 3.  Students who do not have a hat are instructed to play under sheltered areas such as the Undercover Area near the canteen. Caps are not acceptable as they do not provide adequate protection to the ears and back of the neck from the sun.
