Dear Families and Friends,

Welcome to our Week 6 Newsletter. It is hard to believe that we are over halfway through the term. It has certainly been a busy first half to the term, with much more learning and fun to come. This week we celebrate Book Week, this year’s theme being Dreaming with Eyes Open. It has been great to see some of the fun activities our students have been participating in this week to celebrate Book Week. Our week will finish with the costume parade on Friday, and I look forward to seeing all of the creative, interesting and inventive costumes.

Planning 2023

Part of our preparation for 2023 is class structures and placements. This can often be a stressful time for school staff and families. While we are planning class structures and placements it is important that we have as much information as possible to make informed decisions that best meet the needs of our students and school. Firstly, I ask that any families that are not planning on returning to Byford PS in 2023 to please let the office know. This will ensure that we have accurate projected enrolments and will hopefully reduce the risk of having to restructure classes once the school year commences. Secondly, if you have any class placement requests based on the educational needs of your child please also forward these onto me. It is important to note that with over 360 students it may not be possible to meet all requests, but all will be considered. Please email this required information to Byford.PS@education.wa.edu.au and attention it to Jody Harrington.

Year 6 School Captains 2023

Our Year 5 students have recently had the opportunity to nominate for the role of Year 6 School Captains in 2023. I was incredibly pleased and proud of the quality of nomination letters submitted, outlining why students believed they were suitable for the role. We have fifteen well deserving students who have progressed to the next stage in the process, which is to deliver a speech at a special assembly next Wednesday 31st August. At this assembly students will present their speeches and students in Years 3, 4 and 5 will then vote for who they think is the most suitable. The announcement of the school captains will be at the Edu Dance Concert in Week 9. A Class Dojo will be sent out to Year 5 parents informing them of the time of speeches next week, parents and families are encouraged to attend.

Kindy & Pre-Primary Enrolments 2023

A final reminder that if you haven’t got your Kindy and/or Pre-Primary enrolments in yet, then please do so as soon as possible. Kindy places are filling up fast across both Byford Primary School and Byford Community Kindergarten. Information on orientation days will be coming home soon and enrolments need to have been submitted to receive this information. Any questions please contact us at the front office.

Jumps, Throws & 400m Individual events will be held on Monday 5th September.

The jumps and throws will run simultaneously, beginning at 8:45am.

Ribbons for the top four competitors will be presented as the events happen.

Our 400m race will be held at the completion of the jumps and throw events, approximately 11:45am.

Parents and families are invited to join us for this morning and cheer on the competitors.

Faction Carnival Day will be held on Tuesday 6th September for Year 1 – 6.

We are looking forward to a fun day of running and team game events. Students are asked to wear their faction colours on the day.

The day will commence at 8:50am with all factions marching down the track and into their faction bays. The student running races will be held first, followed by the team events.

Parents are welcome to attend and we look forward to a great atmosphere to cheer on the competitors.

We request all students to please stay in their faction bays during the day to be ready for their events. Students will not sit with their families until lunchtime. We also please request parents to not enter the faction bays as this area is for students only as they cheer on their peers and prepare for their events.

Don’t forget to get your sausage sizzle lunch order forms in to enjoy a special carnival day lunch.

Room 11 Pre-primary would like to thank Mrs Marshall for all the wonderful work she has done in our class and in our school community.  We wish her all the best for her retirement from teaching and hope she enjoys her travelling adventures.  The students from Room 11 have done portraits of Mrs Marshall and written some comments.  We will miss you.

In HASS we have been learning about caring for places and incorporating aboriginal dreamtime stories such as the Rainbow Serpent or Waugul to understand the importance of maintaining our natural features, specifically those in our local area. We love to learn and usually make something to clarify our understanding because it’s fun to create! When we make things Miss Crickmore likes to give us only basic instructions and direction, rather than creating from templates, so we’re able to problem solve and overcome our own challenges resulting in creations that are personalised. In room 6 we like to create things a little different, by trying not to use anything new, preferring to reuse or recycle things that have already served another purpose. Sometimes we make things, then take photos for our memories, before pulling them apart for the components to be used over and over again. We usually feel proud of our achievements and the values we’re learning can be taken with us and applied through all aspects as we develop and grow into responsible citizens.

Here are some photos of our Rainbow Serpents - we used our fine motor skills to cut strips from magazine pages to create our own individual rainbow serpents.

Someone once said, “When anxiety weighs down the heart, a good (encouraging) word makes the heart glad.”

We are not talking about clinical anxiety here, that needs special care and attention. We are talking about the everyday concerns that we shoulder that bring concern and worry. We are so busy today that there doesn’t seem to be any relief in sight.

Thumbs_up.jpg

So, if someone you see seems burdened, be encouraged to say something good and encouraging. It might even be as simple as saying a phrase like “Are you ok?” To give someone an opportunity to vent is sometimes all they need to carry on. Knowing that someone else understands a little of what you are going through and cares enough to ask and listen is powerful medicine.

Joe Grida - School Chaplain

Zooper Dooper Thursdays

Zooper_Dooper.jpg

Zooper Doopers are continually being sold on Thursdays for 50c each and even though the weather is cooler, let’s be honest, it’s never too cold for an icy pole when you’re a kid!  We’re always in need of Zooper Doopers to continue this fundraising venture and are very appreciative of donations.  If you can help please drop Zooper Doopers to the senior block.

 Containers for Change

Containers_for_Change.png

We’ve joined the Containers for Change team to raise money for the year 6 camp, whilst helping to make a real difference to the environment.  This will roll over to  the Year 6 Fundraising Committee every year.  Donation bins have been placed in the undercover, blue court and pre-primary areas for students to donate their used water/drink bottles, juice and milk boxes (please look out for the 10c icon on the side of the container).  If you wish to donate containers from your household, please quote our Scheme ID #C10425624 when you drop off your containers to the recycle drop-off points and the funds will automatically get deposited into our fundraising account.

Call for Volunteers – 2023 Year 6 Fundraising Committee

Following Father’s Day, we will hold a meeting to start brainstorming fundraising ideas which can start in Term 4.

Hat_Sun.png

A ‘No Hat, Limited Outside Play’ policy is enforced at Byford Primary School all year.  Parents can assist us by reinforcing the need for protection from the sun by ensuring that students have a wide brim hat. Hats can be purchased through the school uniform shop next to Room 3.  Students who do not have a hat are instructed to play under sheltered areas such as the Undercover Area near the canteen. Caps are not acceptable as they do not provide adequate protection to the ears and back of the neck from the sun.
