Dear Families and Friends,

Welcome to our final Newsletter for Term 2. It is hard to believe that we are reaching the end of another school term. I would like to congratulate and thank all of our students and staff on the way they persevered and supported one another through a semester of learning that was full of disruptions. I am currently reading semester one progress reports and it is great to hear about what the students have achieved so far this year even during the challenging times. I look forward to what the next two terms bring.

NAIDOC Week 2022

Next week at BPS we will be celebrating NAIDOC Week. The theme for this year's NAIDOC Week is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!

Across the week, classes will be participating in a number of in-class activities. On Monday (27 June) we are being visited by two of the amazing AIEO's and some of the Follow the Dream students from Byford Secondary College who will work with some of our junior and middle primary classes on activities such as yarning, face painting and bracelet weaving. Our upper primary classes will also be participating in some cultural cooking.

It will be a wonderful week of learning about and celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

On Monday (27 June) we invite all students and staff to wear NAIDOC shirts or colours.

Looking forward to a wonderful week of learning and celebration.

Semester 1 Student Progress Reports

Your child will receive a Semester 1 Progress Report next week. This progress report will provide you with information on how your child is progressing against the curriculum taught so far in the year. The Department of Education released some information on how some modifications will be made to the Reporting process this semester due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. A detailed letter outlining these modifications will be posted on class dojo. Reports will be emailed home in Week 10. If you have recently changed your email address please make sure you update this with front office to ensure that all Reports make it home.

Kindergarten & Pre-Primary Applications to enrol 2023

Byford Primary School is now taking enrolment applications for students entering Kindergarten and Pre Primary in 2023. Both Byford Primary School and Byford Community Kindergarten will be offering a Kindergarten program in 2023. Advanced Standing

This year we are introducing a new component to our Good Standing Policy. Advanced Standing is to acknowledge and thank those students who consistently demonstrate outstanding achievement, actions and attitude across all aspects of school life. Each term teachers will nominate up to two students from each class who are deserving of advanced standing, and will use our Byford Way Values matrix to demonstrate why students have been nominated for this award. Nominated students will then get to participate in a special lunch or activity with the principal in the last week of term. Winning students will be recognised at the Week 10 assembly and have their reward on the last day of term. Notes will go home to the parents of the students reaching Advanced Standing for Term 2 early next week.

In Room 5 this term we are learning about all the features of modern narrative. During our Talk for Writing unit, we learned the story The King’s Cake. We had lots of fun re-enacting the story using props and puppets, we even had a battle with Room 4 in acting out our story. During the innovate stage we changed our story to The Witch’s Cake. The children have been learning some amazing adjectives to make the characters come to life.

Italian

Rooms 9, 10 and 13 have been learning the rooms of the house and how to describe their house. As part of Harmony Day, we looked at houses around the world (le case del mondo) and they learned specifically about Italian homes and how they are the same or different to Australian ones, namely that Italians generally live in smaller houses with smaller rooms and that many live in apartments. They have also learnt what a bidet is! They created a diamond poem comparing either an Italian house or an Indian tepee to Australian houses. The poem is a diamond shape from using a certain pattern of nouns, adjectives and verbs. These poems have been made into a booklet. They have also more recently drawn a bird’s eye view of their own house and labelled and described their house in Italian.

On Tuesday 21st June our Year 5 & 6 classes were educated about our WA Legal System to empower them with practical information about the laws affecting them, as young people.

A lawyer from Legal Aid visited our school to talk to our upper primary students, presenting a free community legal education session, titled ‘R U Legal?’

The session was presented by a lawyer and presented the lawyer’s perspective, using real life examples to demonstrate legal consequences for young people.

The R U Legal? program presented information on:

  • The age of criminal responsibility
  • Common ways that young people get into trouble
  • Cyber bullying and identity theft
  • School fights and filming of fights
  • Consequences of breaking the law
  • Rights when dealing with the police
  • Where to get help

On Friday 10th June, students travelled to Serpentine Pony Club to compete in our annual Interschool Cross Country event.

The top six runners from years 3 to 6 represented our school and competed in the cross country event, running 1000metres and 1500metres.

It was a fantastic event with all students showing commitment and resilience to challenge their bodies and complete the endurance race.

Thank you to all those parents who were able to travel to Serpentine and attend the competition. It was great to build atmosphere, cheer and support our children. This helped make the event more enjoyable.

At the end of competition, the results were very close between four of our five local schools. Byford Primary School placed fourth in the overall competition.

Congratulations to all our Byford competitors, as every student who crossed the line and completed the race received points for our school.

An extra superstar effort must go to 2 of our competitors who placed in the top 3.

Year 5 Girls – Ava D - Champion Girl, winning her race in 1st place!

Year 6 Boys – Brock B - Runner Up Champion Boy, in 2nd place!

Crazy Hair Day is a wonderful day for our children and staff to have some fun showing off their creative and crazy hair styles.  Thank you to all our parents for supporting the P&C fundraiser by helping the children to look amazing and contributing a gold coin to raise funds for the school, your time and generosity is truly appreciated.

Well done to all the students who participated and congratutions to our prize winners.

On Wednesday 22nd June students enjoyed a fun disco reward for those students who have consistently demonstrated the Byford Way and maintained their Good Standing.

Students were grouped into Upper Primary and Junior Primary and danced up a storm in the undercover area, playing fun games like limbo and musical bobs & statues.

It was a fantastic day with students also enjoying showing off their Crazy Hair! It was a fun event to reward our students toward the end of term.

Dear Parents,

Don’t forget to order your school photo pack.

Kapture_Photography_Logo.jpg

If your child didn’t attend the school photo days, Kapture have a studio in Malaga where a portrait photograph can be taken. Once the portrait has been taken it will be merged with the class so it can be included in the Class Composite group. Unfortunately, they cannot digitally add portrait images to the Traditional group.

Also, if you now wish to have a sibling photo taken you can also organise this in the same way.

If you would like to take the opportunity to book an appointment, they ask that you complete a Studio Query form on their website www.kapture.com.au . Click on the Contact Us tab and select the “I wish to make a studio appointment” button. Once that has been submitted, their customer service staff will liaise with you to organise the appointment.

The next studio day will be Monday 11 July during the school holiday period.

Congratulations and well done to all students who received Merit Awards.

Keep up the great work!

Containers for Change

Containers_for_Change.png

We’ve joined the Containers for Change team to raise money for the year 6 camp, whilst helping to make a real difference to the environment.  This will roll over to the Year 6 Fundraising Committee every year.  Donation bins have been placed in the undercover, blue court and kindy / pre-primary areas for students to donate their used water bottles, juice and milk boxes (please look out for the 10c icon on the side of the container).

If you wish to donate containers from your household, please quote our Scheme ID #C10425624 when you drop off your containers to the recycle drop-off points and the funds will automatically get deposited into our fundraising account.

Keep your eye out for more fundraising events for Term 3.

Zooper Dooper Thursdays

Zooper_Dooper.jpg

Zooper Doopers are continually being sold on Thursdays for 50c each and even though the weather is cooler, let’s be honest, it’s never too cold for an icy pole when you’re a kid!  We’re always in need of Zooper Doopers to continue this fundraising venture and are very appreciative of donations.  If you can help please drop Zooper Doopers to the senior block.

The Committee would like to give a huge shout out to Woolworths Byford Marketplace who donated 17 bags of Zooper Doopers to help out with our Zooper Dooper Thursday fundraiser.  Their generous donation is greatly appreciated.

A ‘No Hat, Limited Outside Play’ policy is enforced at Byford Primary School all year.  Parents can assist us by reinforcing the need for protection from the sun by ensuring that students have a wide brim hat. Hats can be purchased through the school uniform shop next to Room 3.  Students who do not have a hat are instructed to play under sheltered areas such as the Undercover Area near the canteen. Caps are not acceptable as they do not provide adequate protection to the ears and back of the neck from the sun.
