Welcome to the Week 6 Newsletter. It is hard to believe that we are already half way through the second school term. It has been wonderful to finally get back to some usual school practices and procedures with the easing of restrictions. We have a few events coming up in the second half of the term, so please take a look at the Save the Date information at the end of my report.
Assemblies (Term 2)
From Week 6 we have resumed face to face assemblies. The assembly schedule for the remainder of term two is as follows:
Week 8, Wednesday 15 June – Room 2
Week 10, Wednesday 29 June – Room 6
Cross Country
Congratulations to all of our Year 3 - 6 students who competed in the Faction Cross Country event last week. There was lots of positive feedback about the high level of participation and sportsmanship on display on the day. This type of feedback makes me incredibly proud to hear. Congratulations to Mercury for coming in first place. A big thank you to Miss Marchetti and Mr Way for their organisation of the day, and good luck to the Byford PS team at Interschool next week.
Semester 1 Student Progress Reports
Your child will receive a Semester 1 Progress Report at the end of Term 2. This progress report will provide you with information on how your child is progressing against the curriculum taught so far in the year. This week the Department of Education released some information on how some modifications will be made to the Reporting process this semester due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. A detailed letter outlining these modifications will be sent home in the next week. Reports will be emailed home in Week 10.
School Photos
Kapture Photography will be attending our school next week to take school photos (Tuesday 7th June and Wednesday 8th June). Please refer to the Class Dojo information posted by Ms Doncon for further details regarding the photo timetable, uniform requirements, sibling photos etc.
National Reconciliation Week 2022
This week we recognise National Reconciliation Week. This year’s theme is ‘Be Brave. Make Change’. National Reconciliation is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to collectively promote reconciliation. Students have or will be participating in different activities throughout the week, please keep an eye out on your child’s class dojo pages as some teachers have been sharing what they have been participating in and we will have some activities and photos to share with you in this Newsletter.

Room 6 had a visit from Sayuri’'s Grandma and together they spoke to the class about some of the noongar language, she brought in kangaroo and possum skins as well as other bits and pieces. The children were taught a dance, had their faces painted with ochre and were gifted a headband.

It has been a “Beary” interesting term so far in Room 12. We started our term learning about ANZAC Day and as part of this students did directed drawings of our favourite teddy bear “ANZAC Ted”. Then we read the book “The Very Cranky Bear” by Nick Bland and we mapped the story, discussed the characters and setting and finally we made our own Cranky Bear. To finishing things off there have been some minor surgeries on the very sick bear in our Veterinary Clinic.

Look who’s looking through my window!
Room 3 would like to share their beautiful art piece with you. We spoke about our favourite animals at the zoo. We then imagined what it would be like if one of these animals were suddenly at our window or in our dreams and what would it look like. The students then coloured their animal as they wanted, drew what it was eating or its surroundings and washed blue edicol dye over the top. Once it was all dry the students made the window panes.
We love our animals and hope you do too.

On Wednesday 25th May 2022, students enjoyed an excellent morning of Faction Cross Country. Students from years 3 to 6 competed in our cross country event, running 1000metres and 1500metres. It was a fantastic event with all students showing commitment and resilience to challenge their bodies and complete the endurance race.
Thank you to all those parents who were able to attend the competition. It was great to build atmosphere, cheer and support our children. This helped make the event more enjoyable.
At the end of competition, the results were very close between three of our four factions…
Congratulations to all our Mercury competitors on winning
the Faction Cross Country for 2022.
Also, a huge congratulations to all students for running and competing in the event and completing the cross country course.
We are now looking forward to our top 6 placed students in each year level, travelling to Serpentine Pony Club to represent our school at the Byford Schools Sporting Association Interschool Cross Country event on Friday 10th June 2022.

Each month two students are chosen as our ‘Aussie of the Month’ and are presented with a badge, certificate and reward at our assembly.
It is awarded to an outstanding citizen in our school community.
Hi everyone. I don’t know how you are going, but I do hope that you are going well.
Friends of my dad would ask, “How are you?” He would simply reply, “Still alive.” He would also say,” I’m thankful to still be around.”
But truthfully, we are not always thankful.
Jim Carey, a famous actor, is quoted as saying, “I think everyone should get rich and become famous and do everything they ever dreamed of, so that they could see that that is not the answer.” A famous author also said, “Be yourself, everyone else is taken.” I agree with them, enjoy being yourself. Don’t be driven to discontentment by what looks like a better life.
Food for thought.

Have a good week everyone.

A ‘No Hat, Limited Outside Play’ policy is enforced at Byford Primary School all year. Parents can assist us by reinforcing the need for protection from the sun by ensuring that students have a wide brim hat. Hats can be purchased through the school uniform shop next to Room 3. Students who do not have a hat are instructed to play under sheltered areas such as the Undercover Area near the canteen. Caps are not acceptable as they do not provide adequate protection to the ears and back of the neck from the sun.
Premier's Reading Challenge
Join the adventure! We encourage you to join us in unlocking the wonderful world of reading for your children. Help them to join the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Will they fly above the clouds, dive into the ocean or jump into a rocket ship? All students from Kindergarten to Year 10 are challenged to read 12 books by 9 September 2022. You can help your children sign up via the website, choose their own avatar and log all the books they read over the course of the Challenge. Weekly prizes will be awarded to students who log a book that week, with major prizes drawn when the challenge ends. Books don’t have to be in English – children are encouraged to read books in their first language. There are extraordinary tourism prizes to be won each week.
